Benefolk 2.0: A significant new chapter for Benefolk

More behind purpose-driven organisations. More ahead for the communities they serve.

For too long, our sector has treated organisational capability as separate from impact, rather than essential to achieving it.

We celebrate programs and outcomes, as we should. But we are often less willing to invest in the leadership, systems, technology, culture and workplace wellbeing that make those outcomes possible.

I have never believed they can or should be separated.

An organisation cannot sustain its impact if its people are depleted, its systems are holding it back or its leaders are navigating increasingly complex demands without the right support around them.

Over nearly two decades working across philanthropy and the purpose sector, I have met so many remarkable leaders and teams. I have seen their ingenuity, resilience and deep commitment to the people and communities they serve. I have also seen how much we ask of them, often without investing adequately in the foundations beneath their work.

Since 2018, Benefolk has supported more than 900 purpose-driven organisations and over 20,000 people via our online resource hubs and events. That experience has taught us that organisational challenges are seldom as separate or straightforward as they first appear.

Organisations need a trusted place to begin. Somewhere they can bring a challenge or opportunity, make sense of what is happening and find the right people to help.

It has also led us to ask a more demanding question of ourselves: what must Benefolk become to provide that support properly?

Turning that conviction on ourselves

Over the past year, we have listened closely to purpose-driven leaders, funders, our specialists, team and board. We have looked honestly at what organisations and the sector need from us as demand and complexity continue to grow. We have reviewed what is working, who we need to be next and what we need to do to respond effectively.

We have had to do the very thing we encourage other organisations to do: step back from the immediate work, examine our foundations and invest in the capability we need for the future.

Benefolk already brought together a remarkable breadth of people and expertise. The opportunity was to create a dedicated, centralised function that could bring the right people together, coordinate their expertise and support our clients more consistently as their needs grow and evolve.

So we have made substantial changes.

One front door. The right people behind it.

We have expanded our team and strengthened our leadership, client support and delivery capability to create a more connected, centralised model. This makes it easier to access the right expertise and solutions for your organisation, with one team coordinating your needs, client relationships and multidisciplinary work, providing greater continuity and clearer accountability.

In-house AI capability and diagnostics built for the sector

We have brought our AI capability in-house and developed a connected suite of AI-enabled diagnostic tools specifically for the sector.

Together, they help organisations and funders understand strengths, pressures and priorities, and make more confident decisions about where support and investment can have the greatest impact.

The suite includes Springboard™, which examines internal organisational capability and was developed and launched with the Anthony Costa Foundation as a key partner; Headwinds™, which identifies external pressures affecting organisations and the sector and was developed with the support of the Geelong Funders Collaborative; and Horizons™, which assesses AI readiness and maturity.

These tools give leaders a clearer view of their organisations and help funders identify patterns across portfolios, places and parts of the sector. The goal is not simply to generate more data, but to enable better conversations, more targeted support and more confident investment in organisational capability.

Merging with an aligned B Corp

Brand strategy and marketing agency Taylor & Grace, a long-standing member of the Benefolk community, has merged with Benefolk. Its team will join Benefolk as an internal brand, marketing and growth unit, giving our clients direct access to exceptional expertise developed over 20 years of helping organisations strengthen their brands, navigate transformation and grow their impact.

I am also delighted to welcome Taylor & Grace founder Darren Taylor as a Director of Benefolk. Darren brings deep experience in building organisations and helping leaders turn ambition into action. His appointment strengthens both our leadership and our ability to support organisations through important periods of change and growth.

Benefolk Basecamp

We are also opening Benefolk Basecamp in South Melbourne - a home for our team and a welcoming hub where clients, specialist partners, funders and others across our community can meet, work, learn and share ideas. We would love you to come by, say hello and experience the space for yourself.

More behind Benefolk capacity

We are increasing our team capacity, strengthening the operational, administrative and delivery capability behind Benefolk. This gives us a stronger foundation to support our growing client base, coordinate more complex work and create greater capacity for the organisations and funders we work alongside.

We have also increased our team capacity to grow our Philanthropy Partnerships managed service, helping foundations prepay for capability-building services that purpose-driven organisations can access through Benefolk when they need them.

Together, these changes constitute Benefolk 2.0. They represent a deliberate investment in the people, expertise, systems, technology and infrastructure required to provide stronger, more connected support.

We have done the work behind the promise, and I am very proud of what our team and community have built.

Ways to engage with Benefolk moving forward

Organisations should not have to diagnose every issue themselves or find their way through a fragmented market of providers before they can begin moving forward.

Benefolk 2.0 brings together the expertise of our specialist partners with our strengthened internal team, philanthropy partnerships, organisational capability, workplace wellbeing expertise, technology and sector-specific diagnostic tools

Leaders can come to us with a challenge or opportunity even when they do not yet know precisely what kind of help they need. Our role is to listen, understand the situation, identify a useful starting point and bring together the expertise required.

For funders and philanthropic partners, this central model offers a more coherent way to invest in organisational strength. It can respond to the needs of individual organisations while also revealing patterns across portfolios, places or parts of the sector. Our diagnostic products will provide a stronger evidence base for understanding where capability investment is most needed and what that investment makes possible over time.

More behind. More ahead.

As we considered how to express this next chapter, we kept returning to one idea:
More behind. More ahead.

More expertise, capability and support behind purpose-driven organisations. More strength and possibility ahead for the people and communities they serve.

It recognises that impact does not happen through programs alone. It depends on strong organisations, supported people and a shared willingness to invest in their capacity to endure, adapt and grow.

It also honours what has brought us here: the Benefolk community built since 2018 and Taylor & Grace’s 20-year legacy, now coming together to support organisations in a stronger and more connected way.

Our ambition is to be the capability and workplace wellbeing partner for Australia’s purpose sector.

I remain deeply hopeful about the sector’s future. Not because the road ahead will be easy, but because I know the calibre, courage and commitment of the people doing this work.

Hope also asks something of us. It asks us to be honest about what is not working, to invest in the foundations of lasting impact and to make sure the people carrying this work feel properly supported.

That is the contribution Benefolk is now ready to make.
We will be at the Philanthropy Australia Conference in Brisbane from 8 to 10 September. If you are attending, I warmly invite you to visit us, meet some of the people behind Benefolk and continue the conversation about what our sector, and the people behind its impact need to thrive in the years ahead.
